The Volkswagen T1 (1950–1967) is the original VW Bus, featuring a split windshield, rear-mounted air-cooled engine, and versatile van and camper versions—an enduring symbol of freedom and 1960s counterculture.

The Volkswagen T1, produced from 1950 to 1967, is the original generation of Volkswagen’s iconic Transporter series and one of the most recognizable vehicles in automotive history. Known by many names—including the Type 2, Microbus, Kombi, or simply the VW Bus—the T1 became a global symbol of freedom, practicality, and counterculture.

Built on the same platform as the Beetle, the T1 featured a rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-four engine and rear-wheel drive, delivering modest performance but exceptional reliability and simplicity. Its split front windshield earned it the nickname “Splittie.” The T1 was available in various configurations, including panel van, Kombi (passenger van), pickup, and the famous Westfalia camper, which turned it into a compact home on wheels.

With its friendly styling, versatility, and durable engineering, the T1 became a cultural icon of the 1950s and 1960s, embraced by tradesmen, families, and the hippie movement alike. Today, it remains one of the most collectible and beloved classic vehicles ever made.
